Philly politicians say the darndest things

Scandals are always abundant in Philadelphia politics. I'm sure they are in other cities; however, our scandals have some comic moments.

Take today's sentencing of one Councilman Rick Mariano. He was convicted back in March 2006 of taking more then US$28,000 in bribes. In exchange, the bribee helped the bribers get city business.

The prosecution wanted to send Rick to jail for 8 to 10 years. The defense said that a sentencing like that would have been too harsh.

But Mariano gave a counteroffer for his possible jailtime.

"Just prior to sentencing, Mariano addressed the court. He admitted responsibility for his crimes but said that he didn't want to go to jail and that jail time wouldn't do him any good. He offered to go fight the war in Iraq instead." (source)

The judge sentenced him to 6 ½ years.

At least Mariano didn't say he was too pretty to go to jail.

That's a creative approach anyway.

It's like he wants to go to the Crusades to escape beheading.

Odd.

Jail time might not do HIM any good, but I'm sure the people he's harmed along the way would feel pretty good about it.

And I would think that being pretty in jail would be an asset, actually. At least you could make the "right" friends if they think you'll be their girlfriend, lol.

Kyah ~ Hello, dear! Creative, yes; brihgt, no.

Whinger ~ I never said he was bright, just funny.

Mr Fab ~ About as much fiber as white bread.

Jade ~ I love politicians, and businessmen, who feel they shouldn't be punished or serve jailtime for their crimes just because they didn't use a gun or physically hurt someone. It's like they're saying, "No one got hurt so what's the big deal?"

A tour of duty in Iraq, that's pretty much hell.....hmm I kinda like the idea of alternative sentencing.

That's awesome. Sometimes I love the sheer brilliance of our politicians. And how funny about being "too pretty" for jail. I have no sympathy.
