Major Wedding SNAFU

The pastor can't do the wedding. He told me that in order for him to perform the service, we (Geo and I) would have to go to premarital counseling which takes anywhere from three to four MONTHS to complete. Not happening! We have an expiration date working against us and time is a tickin'!

He told me that his philosophy is that "he doesn't just conduct weddings as much as he helps create a marriage". Oh whatever.

Fine.

Since he was completely worthless, if anyone knows of a justice of the peace in the Philly area, please let me know.

I believe that Miss Magnolia is ordained in the Church of The Most Holy Fish Net Stocking ... maybe she could help!

Oh, go for the full-on, Philly wedding, and see if you can get Hizzoner, the Mayor Street, to do it!

Having interned one summer in the Circuit court for my county, I'd suggest you call up the Clerk of the Court's office - they have a list of justice of the peace's in the area (the Clerk of the Circuit Court can perform the cermony also but usually they don't travel, you'd have to do it at the courthouse).

I had to take premarital counselling for a year prior to our marriage. Was a pain in the ass, but it got us married and ya know? surprisingly, I did take some of what he had to say with me. Did you know, for example, that statistics prove that people who resided together before marriage are most likely to end their marriage in divorce? That birth order matters in the lifestyle differences you may have with your husband? That familial background, even if you were always raised in Philly, has to do with child rearing and roles in the home? That everything changes once you officially say "I do"? Just a thought...you might actually be intrested after your vows....as a preventative measure. I know you know marriage is work, so that's preaching to the choir, but I found it to be another thing we got to do together and rather insightful. I think more and more churches are leaning towards this mode of thinking. I don't know about philly, but here where I live, there are ministers/jotp's that perform weddings for anyone and are willing todo it as religious or non as you like. You can find them by looking up local wedding providers on the internet, or in our phone books tehre is a special section dedicated to weddings in the yellow pages. Hope this helps! ;)

Through the chapels (at least in my experience here in Canada) you can find officiants willing to perform weddings. Hope this helps

Pax - I would love to have Mags do the ceremony. She has to be one of the most interesting non-bloggers in blogland.

CP - I would rather walk on a fire ant mound NAKED and covered in honey than have that twit that can be loosely called a politician anywhere near me.

VG - you have been most helpful. Of course, I would rather be married in another city than go into Center City Philly. We shall see.

Rowan - thanks for the link. I did get ahold of one guy who said ... oh I'll blog about it instead. Hugs to ya, sweetie! you and VG have helped a lot!!

Cath - thank you, dear! I'll update my links.
